Building a Better Way

Project:  Baseline Environmental Assessment

UST Involvement  Facility ID #–00036994
Confirmed Release:  C-1223-98

DESCRIPTION:

Four (4) 2000-gallon USTs that formerly contained gasoline, were removed from the site in 1998.  A confirmed release (No. C-1223-98) was filed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality-Storage Tank Division (MDEQ-STD).  No closure of tank registration for the tanks was submitted.  MDEQ-STD issued notice to owner that a site assessment, initial assessment report (IAR), final assessment report (FAR), and  a Certified Closure were required.   Retained by the new purchaser to perform a site assessment and BEA. Reviewed all existing and available documentation and data on the site. Designed a scope of work to completely delineate the extent of contamination both vertically and horizontally as well as to allow a determination of any off site migration or potential impact to surface water.  Borings were advanced with continuous sampling in intervals of two feet to a maximum terminus of 12ft. Advanced geoprobe borings in the hoist areas of the mechanical repair garage building and samples were collected for analysis of PNAs and PCBs.  Samplers were decontaminated between each sample.  Collected a  total of twenty one samples in accordance with EPA protocols.  Soil samples for VOC analysis were collected using the methanol preservation technique. VOC soil samples were monitored with a PID meter.  All samples were properly preserved and maintained at < 4 degrees Centigrade and delivered under chain of custody to a qualified independent laboratory. Samples were analyzed for VOCs related to the USTs and 3 samples were analyzed for PNAs and PCBs related to the hoist in the garage.  Concentrations of contaminants exceeded the MDEQ’s RBSLs for soil volatilization to indoor air.  The primarily affected media was soil. No ground water was encountered on the property.  A geologic log was constructed on each boring.  Prepared a BEA.
